Mains water came late to the village and there are still three dry,
but very well preserved glazed brick wells in the village, opposite the
War Memorial, on the Village Green (see picture above) and beside Broom
Foot. There is also an open pipe which still delivers cold spring water
situated just beside the Cottage (see picture below), at the east end of
the Village Green.

There are two disused quarries in Thornley, both on land that is now
privately owned though a permissive footpath runs through the western
Cleugh Quarry (see picture below). Beware of stones falling from the
unstable face and the deep pool of water lying in the quarry bottom.
There are a number of moderately easy and more difficult walks around
and through Thornley, and Collier Wood picnic area, just off the A68
offers plenty of parking space.
