Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Alice Gibbins was born in Wolsingham, attended local school and worked at the local brickworks before moving down South where she met her husband to be Jack. Alice moved back to Wolsingham 23 years ago. She loved to travel and had travelled all over the world including a few cruises; she also loved to walk.  Parish Events

The above schedule hopefully will enable everyone to plan their own activities so that they will be able to take part in everything the Chu rch does.

Home Communions and Visits

If you know of anyone, including yourself, who would appreciate receiving communion at home, please contact the Rector on 527340. This is usually the first Wednesday in the month. Please keep the Rector informed of anyone who is ill or in hospital so that they can be included in his schedule of visits.

Churchwardens Induction (Archdeacon’s Visitation) service was well attended and we enjoyed hosting this special service. Thank you to all involved in making it such a great success.

Parish Church Services

I still need to remind you that Matins once on the fourth Sunday - is now on the second Sunday; some people are turning-up for the Family Service on the second Sunday which is now on the fourth Sunday!  The idea for the change was so that the Sunday School could take part in the Family Service, having attended Sunday School on the third Sunday.

Afternoon Tea at "Serendipity" for the Romanian Christian Humanitarian Foundation (RCHF)

Tuesday 7 June, 2005 3 - 5 p.m.Tea and biscuit £1. Raffle (including prizes donated by Serendipity) and Tombola. 5% off any purchases on the afternoon.

Raffle tickets available from Serendipity from 1 June.

Please come along with your friends and enjoy the new venue.

We would like to thank Maralyn and her staff for making this possible. We are aware that there are many calls upon the generosity of people at this time but fund raising for this cause continues. We fund a Maternity programme and a TB awareness programme as well as helping with food, fuel and clothing for poor people. Please come along to find out more about what we do. The Sisters of Mercy and the people of Wolsingham have given us a lot of support in the past and we are very grateful.

This will however be our last fund raising effort. As many of you will know Sr. Anthony has not been well of late and has, with great reluctance, decided that the time has come for her to withdraw from this charity. Fund raising cannot be done by one person alone and so Chris. Raymond has also made the decision to end her involvement with RCHF. Brian is aware of this change and has thanked us and all the people who have supported him over the years very much. We are actively seeking new people to take over this good cause. We have been able to leave Brian with sufficient funds to last him until the end of 2005. If you are interested in becoming part of RCHF please contact Chris. Raymond on the telephone number given below.

Further details on any aspect of RCHF are available from Chris. Raymond, 0191 517 2860.

Thank You

Sr. Anthony from Mill Race, Wolsingham, would like to thank all the many villagers, ex-St. Anne's staff and former pupils who have sent her flowers, gifts and good wishes during her illness. Their prayers and kindness have all been much appreciated and given her great strength

Wolsingham Black Lion Jolly Girls

Wolsingham Community Club

After a most successful AGM in April, with over 40 members attending, a new committee has been elected, and work has already begun on the programme to start in September.  Mr. John Anderson entertained the meeting by reading some of his poems, which were both amusing and moving.  On Wednesday 18th May, Rob Bland will give a talk and slideshow of his visit to Canada . This will be in the Town Hall, Wolsingham at 7pm .  Admission £1, includes refreshments.  New members always welcome.  The meeting on Wednesday 15th June will be a talk by Paul Mercer about the work of the North Pennines Heritage Trust and mining at Nenthead.

The summer programme continues with three outings:

·        Tees River Cruise, on Wednesday 22nd June.  Cost including lunch will be £9.50, with £5 coach fare.  This should be paid on or before 15th June.  The coach will leave the Market Place at 8.30am .

·        Shildon Railway Museum , on the afternoon of Wednesday 13th July.  Admission to the museum is free.  Cost and start time for coach to be announced.

·        Leyburn and Bolton Castle , on Friday 22nd July.  Cost will be £3.50 entry and £6 coach fare, which should be paid on or before 15th June.  The coach will leave the Market Place at 9am .

Please contact 01388 527099 if you are interested in any of these outings.

The Club will have no meetings during August, and will start again on Wednesday 21st September, from 7pm to 9pm , in the Town Hall, Wolsingham.  The speaker will be announced at a later date.

Wolsingham Baptist Church

Rev’d Bill Taylor will give his last address before his return to Texas on Sunday 5th June. On Saturday 11th, there will be Praise and Worship at 7.00pm , when the guest speaker will be Jim Wilkinson from the Holly Bank Christian Centre. David Lennox will be the speaker on 19th June and the Rev’d Ray Richardson  will be here on the 26th.

Po lice Report

P. C. Ian Craggs reported that for April, there were 55 calls, of which ten were crimes: - 3 burglaries, 1, assault, and 6 instances of minor damage.

There had been no dwelling house burglaries, but the school was being targeted. The street safe project had proved to be successful, but the fear of crime was still high. The total crimes for Durham & Darlington were 47115, a reduction on the previous year of 1300, put down to better crime prevention.

Funding for floodlighting at the St. Anne’s Centre was being sought through Crime Prevention and P. C. Craggs would find more details on this. It was reported that more problems were being experienced at Wesley View; the police would attend more often.

The formation of a Young Parish Council is imminent; there has been great interest from the school, with ten prospective members chosen.

Planning for the proposed Youth Shelter in the Recreation Ground goes on.

Additional “No dogs” signs are needed in the Recreation Ground – dogs are still to be seen in the children’s play area.

The Pay and Display system will soon be operational again after the building work is completed.

There are proposals for additional lighting in the Recreation Ground. Mike Philips of Light and Design has offered expert advice.

At the Parish Council AGM, John Anderson was elected as Chairman for a second term.

News from Wolsingham School and Community College

More Anti-Bullying Recognition – another award

Hot on the heels of last month’s good news about our school achieving a nationally recognised Anti-Bullying Accreditation for its work in supporting students, we are pleased to announce that some of our Year 11 students have received the Diana, Princess of Wales Anti-Bullying Award.  Seven Year 11 students trained as ‘Amigos’, giving up their free time to stamp out bullying and support students throughout the school.

Debra Lanceley, Danielle Martin, Sarah Morton, Rebecca Moseley, Claire Robson, Gemma Strong and Andrew Embleton, were chosen for the award because of their inspirational qualities, which included securing an AQA Certificate in peer mentoring and counselling.  Assistant Headteacher, Anne Walton, who has worked closely with these Amigos said, ‘We are very proud of these seven students, their achievements, compassion and willingness to give their own time to help and support others.’

What happens after the Examinations?

Year 9 students have now completed their SATs, but Year 11, 12 and 13 students are busy preparing for their examinations.  Year 13 had their official Leavers Assembly on Friday 6 May, before some of the earlier examinations began in earnest.  It was a poignant assembly, where students reflected on their 7 years at Wolsingham School and Community College, received their Records of Achievement and looked forward to an exciting and promising future - over 81% of Year 13 students have a provisional place at university.

Both Year 11 and Year 13 students are looking forward to their Leavers’ Ball, which follow after their examinations.  Year 13 is holding its Leavers’ Ball at Jersey Farm in Barnard Castle and Year 11 has booked the Helme Hall Park Hotel.  Both events promise to be a night not to be forgotten, with formal dress – ball gowns, cocktails dresses and dinner jackets, a sit down meal and dancing afterwards.  The majority of the arrangements have been undertaken by the students for the students.  It seems a fitting way to mark the end of an important part of a young person’s life and staff and students alike are looking forward to two successful evenings.

Open Evening on Thursday 7 July –

5pm for Year 6 parents and students

6pm for Year 5 parents and students

We are again organising a week long induction for our Year 6 students to help them to settle in before they join us as Year 7 students in September.  The Year 6 students will meet members of their tutor group, spend time on team building exercises and sample the new curriculum.  Students will experience these activities in their mixed ability tutor groups.  In September, all Year 7 students will be banded into 3 ability groupings for a majority of their teaching time.

On Thursday 7 July, Year 6 parents will be invited to meet staff and have a look around the school from 5pm onwards and in a change to previous years; we are also inviting Years 5 parents to visit the school from 6pm onwards.  Invitations will be going out to our partner primary schools very soon, but if you want further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school on 01388 527302.

And Finally…

Interactive Lessons

Wolsingham School and Community College has just placed an order for 6 Interactive Whiteboards to be located in key curriculum areas.  The Interactive Whiteboards are a fantastic teaching aid allowing staff and students to access exciting, up to date and useful resources to enhance and promote learning.  Each member of staff, who has an Interactive Whiteboard sited in their classroom, will be charged with developing use of these boards in schemes of learning within their subject area.  These teachers will also be expected to support their department colleagues, so that, through training, we can ensure effective use of this new technology.
