TOWN CRIER June 2004

BUBBLY BUFFET AND BI-LINGUAL BINGO

Wolsingham’s French Connection is giving advanced notice that it will be repeating last years very successful Bubbly, Buffet and Bi-lingual Bingo event and as the Town Hall has a limited capacity early bookings will be necessary to avoid disappointment.

This year the event will be held on Wednesday 14th July in the Town Hall commencing at 7.00pm

There will be numerous prizes ,some in Euros . Come along and enjoy the continental atmosphere .

PRIMARY SCHOOL LUNCH

The Primary School’s late lunch club for senior citizens has proved to be very popular and is here to stay. A second lunch was arranged for 10th May and even though it was arranged at too short a notice to be advertised in last months Crier it was attended by 27 adults .

A big thank you on behalf of the guests is due to the kitchen staff and the children.

Advance notice is now given for a further late lunch on 21st June at 4.00pm. If interested please leave your name at Ridleys Paper shop or Shuttleworths

POLICE REPORT

During April the local police held a successful cycle marking day in the towns and villages of Weardale. It is proposed to repeat the event some time later in the summer.

During April only 6 calls were received by the police relating to youth problems in Wolsingham. However the police when talking to local residents were left with the feeling that there were many more incidents which had not been reported. It is crucial that people contact the police whenever there is a problem that needs their attention. Records are kept of the calls and it is important that all incidents are reported.

Over the past couple of weeks dedicated patrols have been employed to tackle the problem of anti-social behaviour. Your call therefore may provide useful information for the future deployment of resources.

Don’t forget there is a mobile police surgery with a mobile police office visiting Wolsingham every month and which will park in the Market Place.. The police will be only too pleased to discuss any police related problems you might have. No appointment is required just call in, you will be welcome.

FOOTBALL PRESENTATION

A celebration Disco will be held in the school on 17th June from 6-00pm until 8-00pm.to mark the achievements of the school’s football team.

Presentations will be made to all members of the team as league winners with further trophies for the players player of the year , the leading goal scorer and the overall player of the year.

At the time of preparing this article the team had progressed as far as the Rudd Cup semi-final. Lets hope they will end up with cup finalists trophies as well.

PLANNING

An application for a change of use to convert a cottage in East End into a Ladies Hairdressing salon has been submitted but the Parish Council has received a number of objections from local residents.

The objections suggest that the application conflicts with several criteria in the district plan. Also, in view of the shortage of affordable homes in Wolsingham, it makes no sense whatsoever to convert the small cottage into a business establishment

SNIPPITS

  • The first visit by the Northumbria in Bloom judges went well, they were impressed at the the tidy condition of our streets. They are visiting again in July by which time Wolsingham should be a blaze of colour
  • The path from Church Lane to the church is permissive only and is the responsibility of the Church. The path behind the church is on the definitive map and the District Council is responsible for litter picking there.
  • Weardale Railway appear to have blocked off the existing footpath near the steelworks despite that fact that a new safe footpath was to be installed first and the official diversion approval has not been issued. The Parish Council has complained
  • Negotiations are on going with the County Council with a view to the possible return of the Demesne Picnic site back to the Parish Council
  • Planning approval has been given for the erection of an agricultural building at Scotch Isle Park and also for the replacement of an existing conservatory in Meadhope Street

GOVERNMENT STATISTICS

There has recently been a great deal of media coverage in relation to areas of deprivation . Wear Valley District Council has always been classed as a deprived area and the latest Government figures attempt to break down such areas into smaller units so creating a more accurate picture for individual locations. It has called each location a Super Output Area (SOA)and created a league table for all 32,482 such areas in the country. The most deprived area being no 1 and the least deprived no.32482.

So how is Wolsingham placed? Remembering that the greater the league placing the less deprived it is the following statistics will surprise most people

Deprivation 19,601

Income 17,775

Employment 16,253

Education and skills 20,545

Crime 19,422

Living Environment 31,452

All the above statistics place Wolsingham in the top 50% SOA’s in the country and only in relation to "barriers to housing and services " is it below average with a league position of 9548.

We all know that Wolsingham is special but to be told that in relation to the living environment we are in the top 96% of the best places to live takes some believing.. Of course it may be that the criteria used is suspect but it applies in the same fashion to all areas and the overall comparison is on a like with like basis .Consequently it cannot be ignored.

Having said that the definition of a Super Output Area (SOA) is not at all clear but whatever the case Wolsingham which now includes Witton le Wear is a much better than average SOA..

RECREATION GROUND PROJECT.

Details of the project appeared in last months Crier since which time planning approval has been given. Following such approval a further meeting was held on Thursday 13th May in the pavilion. John Docherty and Joy Brindle of the Chief Executives office at Wear Valley District Council attended and volunteered to help in relation to any Lottery Funding required. There were 17 members of local community groups present to hear John and Joy’s enthusiastic support for the project supported with the offer of their professional expertise in guiding and assisting with any grant applications

Another meeting has therefore been arranged for FRIDAY 4TH JUNE at 6.30pm in the Town Hall and it is hoped that as many representatives as possible from different local groups will attend. Notices will be displayed in the Town nearer the date. The Community Centre proposal is important for Wolsingham and we now seem to have a golden opportunity to provide the town with its first Communty Centre. There is of course much work still to do but given the support to date there is no reason why this venture should not be successful

The adventure play equipment which was initially the second phase of the project has moved forward and the required equipment has already been ordered by the Parish Council although it could be several weeks before it is installed. When carrying out the installation the contractors will move the bottom part of the present fence enclosing the younger childrens play area. This will enable several pieces of equipment to be erected between the fence and the hedge to the west of the Bowling Green.

The Riverside element of the overall project is the only aspect which has not moved forward since the Criers report last month. There has been no official response by English Nature to the approach made by WRECASS some time ago although it is anticipated that there will need to be a meeting involving English Nature, Groundwork Trust ,the Parish Council and WRECASS to discuss different ideas.

The Recreation Ground as it exists at present is a major asset to Wolsingham but if it can be improved as proposed it will be of increased benefit to local people as well as visitors.

The Town Crier will carry detailed updates from time to time.

Cathy Coulson had lived in Wolsingham since 1947, when she with others arrived to work on the land as ‘Land Girls’, helping out during and following the end of the war. During her working life she had worked at Bournmouth looking after children and at Redgate Hall here in Wolsingham. Cathy liked helping people and had many friends; she also enjoyed family life, especially her grandchildren. Cathy had been married to her beloved Bill for 54 years. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Do you know Wolsingham?

Are you Wolsingham born and bred? Or, have you lived here long enough to know the place like the back of your hand? If so, your local knowledge would be invaluable to the team of First Responders.

We have been up and running for two years, and at present there are eight members. During that time some of us have been called out up to 4 or 5 times. Others have had a quieter life; it all depends when emergencies happen. But what is important is that when someone is having a heart attack or lying unconscious, we get there quickly: so knowing where streets and houses are is vital. Up to now, unless we have been called to another village, we have always arrived before the ambulance.

Sadly, there are times during the day when we cannot manage full coverage. No one is available. And last year, because of this, we missed a couple of local emergencies … We need a larger team.

If you drive, have use of a car and are available from your home or business in Wolsingham, even for a few hours a month, please think about it. Your local knowledge and availability might make the difference between life and death.

Training is thorough but not difficult. Each of us is validated (and insured) by the NE Ambulance Service. We are also individually re-assessed and up-dated every three months. Rest assured, too, that you will not be called to road accidents or to anything that is not related to heart or breathing emergencies.

The most important thing is to increase the team size to get better cover, so if you are interested and don’t know all the street names, please get in touch – we have a street map and help from ambulance control to find addresses.

So, if you could help and would like to know more, pick up a phone and ring either Ann on 526449 or Charles and Eileen on 527038. And now is as good a good time as any – if we are not in, you can always leave a message with your number and we will get back to you. CL.

Work Experience for Wolsingham Pupils

During the two weeks after half term, Year 10 pupils at Wolsingham School will be out of school, gaining an insight into the world of work.

From to Newcastle to Northallerton, from Sunderland to Penrith, the pupils will be observing how business and industry operate. Many will be based in Weardale but there are not enough placements locally to accommodate over 150 pupils. Steve Glover and Julie Maddison will endeavour to visit as many as possible. " We hope that they find this an enriching experience, which will help them to make sound career decisions", commented Mr Glover.

Wolsingham Baptist Church

There will only be two speakers at the June services. David Woods will be in Wolsingham on the 6 and 13 June, while David Lennox from Stocksfield will lead the services on June 20 and 27.

News from St. Bartholomew’s Church.

Thornley Village.

Hi Everyone

Wow! 517.42p in 2 hours. That was the money raised to be shared between the Blue Peter Mencap Appeal and Insulin Pumps for Children with Diabetes. Brilliant! Saying ‘Thank you’ to everyone involved doesn’t seem enough. Well done, to Joanne, Geraldine, Charlotte and Trevor the youngsters that worked so hard.

FLOWER and WEDDING DRESS FESTIVAL. (August Bank Holiday weekend) More details for you. Thornley Teas will be served in the Village Hall each afternoon. The church will be open from 11am to 4pm, and maybe 2 hours in the evening. We have all the dresses we need, but promises of flowers, home cooking and help in the church and Village Hall would still be very welcome. See me for matters relating to the Church bit and Amanda (731121) for the Village Hall bit. Thanks.

More immediate is the CHURCH SUMMER FAYRE. Saturday 12th June at 2pm in the Rectory Garden Wolsingham. There will be the usual stalls, Tombola, Produce, Books, Crafts, Bottles. A Bouncy Castle, Teas, Raffles, Face Painting and lots more. I’ll be round to pester you for things for the Tombola, Raffle and Stall. Once again, thank you. Remember, it is you that makes these events successful. I’ve had people say "but I only bought Raffle Tickets" that’s great, it’s 50p we didn’t have !

You will have missed it by now, but the Bluebells in Thornley Step Wood are a carpet of soft blue beneath that beautiful fresh green of the new leaf growth. A picture that stays with me from year to year. Put it in your diary for a visit next spring!

That’s all for now. Remember:-

Holy Communion : Sundays 9 : 30am.

Family Service : First Sunday in month.

Bye for now. Geraldine - 01388 730012.
