Thinking Of Others

In recent years our students have raised thousands of pounds for local, national and international charities. As well as raising money they have also collected gifts of food, clothing and toys for others less fortunate than themselves. Sometimes these gifts were sent abroad, sometimes they were distributed locally.

This term the students as always were keen to participate in lots of fun activities to raise money for Children in Need and when all of the money has finally been collected a cheque will be sent off to the BBC appeal.

In the run up to Christmas in the past we have often concentrated on filling shoe boxes for poor children in Eastern Europe, a charity activity which the students and their parents have really enjoyed supporting. For a change this year we have turned our thoughts towards the elderly people in our own area. The “Presents for Pensioners” appeal, organised by a team of younger students, involved collecting items of food, clothing, toiletries and small gifts which would be appreciated by the older members of our local community. These are currently being packed into attractive mini hampers and will be distributed before Christmas. The students have enjoyed this new venture and are hoping that their efforts brighten up Christmas for others in our local community.

Holy Baptism

Kieron Alan Henderson Sunday 2 November at Wolsingham Parish Church

Through faith you are all children of God in union with Christ Jesus. Baptised into union with him, you have put on Christ as a garment.

Funerals

Jessie Young at 16 October at Wolsingham Parish Church

Harold (Harry)Forster 4 November at Wolsingham Parish Church

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.

For the past eight years Jessie Young had lived at Crosshill’s, but  came to Wolsingham in 1935 when she started work as a district nurse. She was born in Thorpe Thewles, one of four sisters. She brought many babies into the world but she was also friend to many, helping people to recover from illness, helping the elderly and young mothers to cope, seeing to peoples needs in so many practical ways. During the war she trained for the St John’s Ambulance Brigade. Jessie run the guides in Wolsingham, being Guide Captain for 27 years and Commissioner for 12 years. She was a good church member and on Wolsingham Parochial Church Council. Jessie was passionate about gardening; she was president of the Wolsingham and District Chrysanthemum Society. One of her proudest moments was going to London to be presented with a medal for 21 years service as a Queen’s Nurse. Sadly missed but will always be remembered.

Harry Forster had lived in Wolsingham for many years. He served in the RAF where he trained to be an electrician but after leaving the forces re-trained to follow a career in the motor trade, and to run his own business.

Later his career took another turn in to property, a business Harry enjoyed for the rest of his life. He wasn’t too well known in Wolsingham but he had many friends and business associates. Harry enjoyed life to the full and will be sadly missed by his loved ones.
